Google has expensive peering and transit agreements with ISPs around the world to get closer to something called “eyeball networks”, which are your typical ISPs like Comcast, Spectrum, and AT&T. Well, it’s actually cheap, but not if you want a good experience for end users. If that ever happens reddit will probably implode trying to decide between their hatred of YouTube and their hatred of Apple.īandwidth, even for Google, is extremely expensive. If Google pulled YouTube from iOS it would also probably be enough to prompt Apple to create YouTube's first real competitor. If Google and Apple feuded and Google pulled all their products and services from iOS, Google would suffer more. I think you heavily overestimate the reliance the average iPhone user has on Google. Their office suite is definitely not "killer" on iOS. Most iPhone users will already be using Apple Maps. The Gmail app itself really isn't that special. Gmail perhaps, but there are plenty of other mail clients, including the iOS default one, that can connect to Gmail accounts. There's a reason they pay billions to Apple to be the default search engine on iOS.Īnd what killer apps do they have? YouTube. IPhone penetration, particularly in the US, is just too great for Google to want to do this.
